Laminate damage & edge seal issues on recent wrap need advice

Hey folks, I could really use some advice. A customer came in with a van that was wrapped less than a year ago using 3M Scotchcal Gloss and Matte Overlaminate. Unfortunately, there are some spots where the laminate is worn really badly, the grey areas are just adhesive buildup mixed with dirt. It looks like something splashed on it and then just sat there since they've only washed the van three times.

On top of that, the edge seal on the window perf is cracking and peeling. I'm thinking that not washing it regularly might've played a part in this. Has anyone else dealt with these kinds of problems? Is edge sealing still recommended for durability? I'd really appreciate any thoughts!

Well, sounds like they haven't washed it in years! Dirt and grime can eat into the overlaminate when left for too long. It's wrapped but still requires regular cleaning. Edge sealing is still widely recommended, especially for perf installs, but make sure it's applied properly and not too thick. Did the van get parked outside most of the time? That can speed up wear too.

Did the installer use a proper edge seal tape or just a liquid sealer? And was the van exposed to harsh chemicals or pressure washing? That combo might've accelerated the wear.

I agree that it seems like a combination of issues at play.
Edge sealing is still the best practice for extending the life of a window perf and preventing lifting, so it's a step that shouldn't be skipped!
Also try checking the specific 3M product data sheets to see if there are any known issues or recommended cleaning protocols that could support your diagnosis.

sounds like a chemical burn to me. 3M Scotchcal is durable, but it's not invincible. If something like fuel, a harsh cleaner, or even some types of brake fluid sat on the vinyl without being washed off, it can break down the top layer of the laminate
When the laminate fails, you get that sticky, adhesive buildup that grabs dirt. This is a maintenance issue, not an installation one, and it's something the customer needs to understand. Regular washing is key to preventing this

@modwrapmaven761 I think I agree with everyone here.... it sounds like the overlaminate just got neglected. Regular washing and proper edge sealing really do make a huge difference in durability
